PointsBet Canada Looks Towards B.C. Gambling Regulation
PointsBet owner MIXI has shared plans that it’s looking towards entering not only Alberta’s upcoming regulated market, but also sees a future in casinos in British Columbia.
In an earnings call for its FY2026 second-quarter results, MIXI Chief Executive Officer and President Koki Kimura acknowledged that the Canadian-regulated market was expanding “rapidly” with more and more provinces looking also to mirror Ontario’s framework.
In an investor presentation, it was also mentioned that Canada has “high potential” for PointsBet, with Alberta and more provinces primed to open their own regulated markets in the coming years.
“The [Canadian] market for both sports and iGaming is expected to grow at over 30% per annum. We aim to capitalize on this market growth to expand profitability,” the presentation read.
It was also noted that revenue from PointsBet’s Canadian operations has continued to grow each year since Ontario’s regulated market opened in 2022. MIXI revealed that the appeal of the Canadian market was also based on its own research, assuming legalization in Alberta and B.C.
Canadian Senators Push for Gambling Ad Reform
More than 40 Canadian senators have signed a petition addressed to Prime Minister Mark Carney, urging the ban of all sports gambling ads in the country.
The petition, led by Senators Percy E. Downe and Marty Deacon, argues that gambling advertisements are creating serious harm among Canadians, especially those being targeted to youths.
The letter reads, “People of all ages (are) exposed to a constant stream of advertisements promising a ‘premium gaming experience’ and urging them to turn their phone into a pocket-sized casino. We are asking for a ban on all advertising for sports gambling apps and websites. Such a measure would be similar to the advertising ban for cigarettes, and for the same reason: to address a public health problem.”
The increase in action comes after a recent push by medical experts in September, who, in an editorial posted to the Canadian Medical Association Journal, also called for restrictions on ads after more teens had been coming forward with gambling addictions.
