Prince Edward Island Red Shore Casino Profits Decline
According to the Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC), the Red Shore Casino and Race Track at Prince Edward Island (PEI), the largest in the region, saw profits decline in the 2045-25 fiscal year. Yet, remain confident it will turn a corner in the following year.
The ALC, owner of Red Shore, saw profits increase by nearly $12 million in the same fiscal year. However, the casino’s profits were reportedly down 35% from the year prior, with a profit of $2.5 million.
The organization overall reported profits of $25.9 million in returns to PEI from lottery revenue, just under $1 million less than the year prior, while all other Atlantic provinces saw revenues increase.
President of the ALC, Dalla McCready, told CBC News, “Many of the other provinces are experiencing the same type of thing with land-based casino operations. The number of visits has been fairly consistent and strong, but the amount spent at each visit is certainly down.”
However, McCready stated that so far this year, numbers have been strong, and he is not concerned about Red Shore in the long run, as it is currently going under renovations, which are hoped to bring benefits when they are complete in early 2026.
Canadian Prime Minister Challenges Trump to Friendly World Series Bet
The Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has challenged United States President Donald Trump to place a friendly wager on the outcome of the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers World Series matchup this week.
Talking to the Associated Press, Carney revealed that Trump has yet to take him up on his offer to place a bet, adding as a joke, “I think he’s afraid, I think he’s afraid to make a bet. He doesn’t like to lose. He hasn’t called. He hasn’t returned my call yet on the bet, so I’m ready. We’re ready to make a bet with the U.S.”
Carney went on to predict that the Blue Jays would go on to win the best-of-seven format in six games.
Relations between the U.S. and Canada are particularly tense at the moment, with Trump making remarks at the beginning of his term that Canada would become the 51st state of the U.S., as well as fueling economic tensions by imposing tariffs on the neighboring country.
National Sports Betting Ads Bill Passes Senate Again
After Bill S-269 got stuck in the Commons in 2024, the Canadian Senate has once again given the green light to a new version, S-211.
The bill, which would establish clear guidelines on how sports betting operators can advertise online gambling, was passed by voice vote after its third reading, having received fast-tracked approval from the Standing Committee on Transportation and Communications 11 days earlier.
Senator Marty Deacon, leader of Bill S-211 said in her opening remarks “I hope that was both a reflection of the fact that the bill is a carbon copy of Bill S-269, which had cleared the Senate in the last Parliament, and also an acknowledgement that this is a problem that is not going to get better on its own — that this legislation is needed now.”
While Deacon has previously said she would pursue the idea of a more extensive outright ban, she realizes that it would have been harder to implement, but she said she would be supportive of the idea if the government were to propose it.
The bill is now being sent to the House of Commons, and advocates for the bill hope it will receive the consideration it did not receive last year.
