Ontario Regulator Grants Mixi Approval Amid PointsBet Takeover Bid
In a statement released by Australian sportsbook PointsBet, Japanese entertainment group Mixi has secured regulatory approval from Ontario’s gaming regulator, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO)
As part of the approval, AGCO states that it sees no concern with Mixi’s proposed acquisition of PointsBet. At the same time, Mixi also secured written approval from iGaming Ontario (iGO).
PointsBet currently offers its sports betting platform to players in Ontario and Australia. To operate in Ontario, operators must be granted a license from AGCO and hold an operating agreement with iGO.
Mixi also entered a Bid Implementation Deed (BID) with PointsBet on 16 June. One key requirement of this agreement was for Mixi to gain the necessary regulatory approvals from Ontario’s regulators.
According to PointsBet, Mixi’s offer now awaits approval from the other conditions specified in the BID. This includes meeting the 50.1% minimum acceptance condition and gaining approval from the Foreign Investment Review Board.
